After we travelled in Switzerland twice, we summarized useful tips about transportation, accommodation and food for other tourists and travellers to save time, money and energy.
Tips For Transportation in Switzerland
Renting Cars
As moving around in Switzerland is quite expensive, it’s a good idea to rent a car from Italy or German to do a road trip. For example, you can find cheaper car rent in Freiburg im Bresgau or Milan. Remember to make sure with the car renting company that the renting car is allowed to go to the area that you want to travel. Anyway, it shouldn’t be a problem because the car insurances are currently valid in the whole western Europe if you choose proper insurances.
Highway Pass
The highway pass is only 40 CHF and it is valid for the whole year until 31st January of the following year. You can buy the pass when you enter Switzerland from abroad or in any filling stations or post offices. They will give you a vignette that you must stick to the inside of the windscreen in a clearly visible location.
Fuel
When we travelled in Switzerland, the fuel was much cheaper than in Italy. Later, the fuel price increased and the price is currently similar to other European countries. Anyway, fuel price is still cheaper compared to the standard Swiss living costs.
Driving And Parking
The highway system is well developed and it’s very comfortable to drive there. Just be careful to follow the rules. One of the problems is the car parking. When we reached the centre of the town, we usually parked the car in garages that are quite expensive. Anyway, it is worth to spend money in order to save time to visit the cities.
Tips For Accommodations in Switzerland
Airbnb
As hotels are quite expensive in high season so it’s not a bad idea to live in Airbnb. You can book rooms according to how many nights, how convenient is the location and comfortable you want to rest.
Hotels In Nearby Countries
Another option is to book hotels in nearby countries. Bregenz in Austria and Konstanz in Germany can be easily reached from Zurich. They are both nice towns on the Konstanz Lake and it’s worth spending nights there.
It is convenient not only for the accommodation but also for the living costs. You will be shocked when you compared the price of a banana in a Swiss supermarket to a banana in the Austrian supermarket (even if it is just several hundred meters far from the Swiss borders).
Tips For food in Switzerland
Switzerland is an expensive place to have lunch and dinner. Sometimes you can buy food directly from supermarkets. When you want to eat outside, check carefully on Google Maps about reviews of restaurant in order to not to spend too much for a bad restaurant.
Otherwise, there are kiosks if you want to eat some street food. Our advice is to save money and spend it when you will be in the neighbour’s countries where you can easily go to restaurants.
