Arrive at Ciampino Airport
There are two international airports in Rome. Rome Fiumicino is the biggest one where the intercontinental flights land. The other one is called Rome Ciampino Airport (Full name: Rome Ciampino Airport Giovan Battista Pastine), which is specialized on low costs flights such as Ryanair and Wizz Air land.
The passengers who arrive at Ciampino airport need to be careful because the airport is nearer to the city center than Fiumicino but it is less well connected. The traveller’s choice will depend a lot on where he needs to go and his budget.
Majority of travellers will first reach the Termini train station that is the main station in the city center of Rome. The main Metro lines that cross the Rome city center stop at Termini station. Thus, from Termini tourists can reach both Metro Line A and Line B.
We will explain how to arrive at Rome city center by 4 types of transportation: taxi, shuttle transfer, bus, and train.
By Taxi
In general, you can take taxi if your budget is high and you are in rush.
By shuttle transfer
If tourists are travelling in groups, shuttle transfer is a good option. We recommend to use transfers for families of three or four persons who have huge luggages and little time available. For example, from Ciampino Airport the company Roma Transfer can transport up to four passengers directly to their accommodation. The cost is competitive, because it is € 45.
On the contrary, we advise to consider collective transport for single travellers or couples. We will explain how to arrive at the center by bus and by train. We recommend to arrive at the center by bus that is much more convenient compared to by train. We explain details below.
By Bus
There are at least three companies that guarantee a constant connection from Ciampino Airport to Roma Termini station. The journey takes about 40 minutes.
Terravision
Terravision offers connections between the Ciampino airport and the Termini station at the costs of € 6 (€ 11 if you also buy the return) and no intermediate stops. The first train leaves at 9:35 am and the last one at 11:40 pm. You can find the complete timetables here.
You can purchase the ticket online, which is valid for the same day of the chosen day that you have booked.
SIT Bus
The SIT Bus Shuttle company also offers Ciampino – Roma Termini connections without intermediate stops. The first bus leaves at 8:30 am and the last at 11:00 pm. The cost is € 6 (€ 11 if you also buy the return). You can find the complete timetables here.
SIT Bus Shuttle company offers free wi-fi on its coaches. You can purchase the ticket online, which is valid for the same day of the chosen day that you have booked.
Rome Airort Bus by Schiaffini
The company Rome Airort Bus by Schiaffini also provides the link between the Ciampino Airport to Rome Termini station. This company also provides no intermediate stops. The first bus leaves at 3:30 am and the last at 11:30 pm. The cost is € 6,90 (€ 9,90 if you also buy the return). You can find the complete timetables Here.
A tourist can purchase the ticket online that can be used within 90 days from the purchasing day. Thus, the bus ticket can be used in the following days in case the flight is postponed.
Atral
The Atral company offers another interesting service. It connects Ciampino Airport to Metro Stop “Anagnina” on Line A. This is the very first stop of Metro Line A, at the border of the ring road around Rome. The ticket costs 1,20 € and the journey takes around 20 minutes.
We recommend this service if a traveller destination is on the metro Line A. On weekday, the first bus leaves at 6:54 am and the last at 10:40 pm. On holiday, the first bus leaves at 5:35 am and the last at 11:00 pm.
Be aware that majority of the buses make an intermediate stop in Ciampino Train Station. All the timetables can be seen on the website.
By Train
We don’t recommend this method for arriving in Rome city center because it’s a bit complicated. But some people may want to know some information about arriving by train from the Ciampino ariprot to Rome city center. So we explain details as follows.
There is a small train station called “Ciampino”. Unfortunately, it is located on the opposite side of the airport. Consequently, the tourists can reach the station from the airport entrance only by taxi or bus.
Combined ticket: Bus from Ciampino airport to Ciampino train station + Train From Ciampino train station to Rome Termini
The company ATRAL offers the service Ciampino Airlink. Ciampino Airlink is a combined ticket that costs only 2,70 € to reach Rome Termini. The combined ticket is valid for the Bus from Ciampino airport to Ciampino train station + Train From Ciampino train station to Rome Termini. The ticket can be bought on the Trenitalia (the main public railway company in Italy) website
On the weekdays the first bus from Ciampino airport to Ciampino train station leaves at 6:15 am and the last at 11:30 pm. On the holidays the first bus leaves at 6:30 am and the last at 10:05 pm. On the website of Atral you can find only the bus timetables, whereas in the Trenitalia website you can check the whole route (bus + train) timetables from “Ciampino Aeroporto” to “Roma Termini”.
It takes around 10 minutes by bus to reach the train station Ciampino from Ciampino Airport. It will further take around 15 minutes to reach Rome Termini Station from Ciampino Station.
Travel Tips for by train
Be aware that this is a regional train, so passengers need to look at the destination stop written on the Railway Electronic Noticeboard.
Travellers need to take the trains that go to Rome Termini. All the other trains go to the opposite direction and they move away from Rome.
Between Ciampino and Rome Termini, some trains may stop in “Capannelle” Stop. It is a small train station nearby the main roman racecourse. Just don’t get off there.
This option of by train is the cheapest among all the methods that we mentioned before but it has several problems.
First of all, you need to change between bus and train before even to reach Rome.
Then, the bus and train flow is irregular. During holidays and in some moments of the day there isn’t a continuous flow of trains and buses.
In those moments, if your flight delays, you may need to wait one hour for the next train. It means that you need to check schedules carefully before decide to take the train.
